New data from Parrot Analytics reveals the top 10 "most in-demand superhero movies" in 2023 so far in the United States, a ranking that includes major films from both Marvel and DC.
The first half of 2023 has been a relatively weak period for new superhero movies, with both Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania and Shazam! Fury of the Gods is disappointing at the box office.
However, the positive critical reception so far for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has strong implications for both studios, with it likely helping turn the tide back in Marvel's favor it is directed by James Gunn, who will be heading DC's new slate with Peter Safran.
So, what superhero movies were audiences most interested in and shared the most excitement for?
Most Popular Superhero Movies (2023 Data)
TheWrap obtained a Parrot Analytics chart that depicted the ten "most in-demand superhero movies" in the United States between January 1 and April 23, 2023.
Parrot Analytics defines "in-demand" as a combination of enthusiasm, engagement, and popularity. It is quantified using "search engines, wikis... fan and critic rating sites,... blogs and micro-blogging sites, social media platforms... open streaming platforms," among other things.
The data essentially compares each superhero movie's buzz, excitement, popularity, and amount of involvement to the average during a specific period.
The results are listed below.
10.) Shazam! Fury of the Gods
Shazam! is now ranked tenth in terms of demand in the United States this year. Fury of the Gods, with a demand that is 29.27 times that of the norm. Despite its relatively modest box-office success, it appears that the picture was eagerly anticipated and well-received.
The 2023 Shazam! the sequel, starring Zachary Levi, centered on the Shazam familial's familial relationships, offering a heartwarming narrative of collaboration and sacrifice. The first Shazam-centric picture did well at the box office in 2019, and it appears that enough fans were outspoken enough about their love for the brand that the disappointing sequel cracked the top ten in the United States in 2023.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods is available to rent or buy digitally on platforms such as Apple.
9.) Joker
The Joker from 2019 comes in tenth position on the list, with a demand 31.44 times the norm. The Oscar-winning picture based on the legendary Batman villain was a great smash upon its initial release, appealing to both comic book fanatics and general moviegoers.
Joker has lingered in the present cultural zeitgeist not just because of the memes it spawned, but also because of its sequel, Joker: Folie à Deux, which will be released in October 2024. In Joker 2, Joaquin Phoenix (Joker) will be joined by Lady Gaga (Harley Quinn), perhaps increasing interest in the sequel among Lady Gaga fans who are now viewing the original film.
Fans, both old and new, appear to be starting to plan for the Elseworlds sequel early, if not already.
8.) Zack Snyder's Justice League
Zack Snyder's Justice League is the seventh most-wanted superhero film in the United States this year, with demand 31.95 times the average. The film was called the "Snyder Cut" by fans eager to see the original Justice League (directed by Joss Whedon) re-released as envisioned by Zack Snyder, which happened in March of 2021.
This four-hour-and-one-minute re-release is a fan favorite, and the SnyderVerse in which it takes place is the focus of an April convention event. Aside from its success, the picture has received a lot of love and attention after James Gunn and Peter Safran were hired to revamp the DC Universe.

7.) Deadpool
Seven years after its release, Deadpool remains a fan-favorite superhero film, as seen by its seventh-position ranking, with demand 33.1 times the average. After being unhappy with the character in the terrible X-Men Origins: Wolverine, audiences fell in love with Ryan Reynolds' depiction of the "merc with a mouth" in the film.
Following a well-received sequel, Marvel revealed that 2024's Deadpool 3 will reunite Reynolds as Deadpool with Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. The buildup to this disclosure was immense, which likely contributed to Deadpool's high demand in 2023.
Deadpool continues to thrill and, at times, shock viewers while remaining funny, self-referential, and ready to take chances.
Deadpool is now accessible to watch online.
6.) Avengers: Endgame
Avengers: Endgame, the conclusion of the MCU's Infinity Saga, is now ranked sixth in terms of demand this year, with 33.15 times the norm. Since its debut in 2019, Endgame has been regarded as the standard against which other MCU films are measured – good reviews of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 for example, underlined how it compares to the fourth Avengers picture.
Endgame, which included practically every character in the MCU when it was published, has almost become required watching for every hero's character arc, whether it be the conclusion, continuation, or commencement of one.
Until the current Multiverse Saga's probable Endgame-like climax, this cultural phenomenon will undoubtedly linger in people's thoughts, regardless of whether they are Marvel fans, enjoy what the movie symbolizes, or even despise it.

The excitement for the sequel, like previous items on the list, is expected to contribute to the movie's 2023 demand — especially considering the delays that lengthened the wait for the already-anticipated film.
Furthermore, because of its globally recognizable coming-of-age theme and fascinating tale, Spider-Verse can appeal to anybody, Spider-Man devotees or superhero skeptics.

3.) Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania
Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania has moved into the top three of the list, with demand 47.84 times that of the average. Following its February 2023 release, the third film in the Ant-Man franchise underperformed at the box office and with reviewers.
Despite this, excitement for the Paul Rudd-led film was high, with it placing third in an anticipation poll towards the end of 2022. Despite its flaws, the film did lay the groundwork for the MCU's future. However, some of that setup has been called into doubt in light of Jonathan Majors' latest assault allegations.
Regardless, the discussion around this picture and what it means for Marvel's future is most likely why it scores so high, despite its more negative aspects.
2.) Spider-Man: No Way Home
Spider-Man: No Way Home, released in 2021, is the runner-up, with demand 50.58 times the average. The third film in the MCU's Spider-Man franchise was a huge commercial success, and it more than delighted fans by continuing not just Tom Holland's Spider-Man tale, but also Tobey Maguire's and Andrew Garfield's.
Spider-Man: No Way Home was crammed to the brim with moments and allusions to watch over and over again, bringing in characters from multiple other genres, including the aforementioned Spider-Man reboots, the MCU as a whole, the Venom flicks, and Daredevil.
Given all of this, as well as a captivating tale, heartfelt performances, and hilarious writing, it is no wonder that Spider-Man: No Way Home rates so well even more than a year after its release.

As such, it has undoubtedly been a big role in the superhero film community, adding to the stated high demand.
